Emerging Technologies - Robotics

Introduction:

The phenomenal improvements in computer science had enabled humans to mimic human actions through Robots. The study of Robots are called Robotics science. Robots and computer science are mutually dependent, since the programming for making robots functional, are done through computer programming.

Robots uses and performs mobility, sensors to understand movements or actions, and programming through computers. Mr. George Devol is called the Father of Robotics - An American who invented the first robot in mid 1950's. His invention - ' Programmed article transfer' ultimately named as Robot and the birth of Robotics industry was born. Also read the following related articles:

Robotics Segmentation:

The utilities of Robots can be classfied into the following areas,

  1. Robotcs performing office clerical functions - office automations

  2. Robots performing repeated tasks at factories - Industrial automations

  3. Humanoids resembling humans, performing repeat tasks at Banks, Restaurants, Travel agencies etc.,

  4. Defense Robots performing dangerous tasks like removal of mines, photography, Professional service robots at the war front.

Industrial robots

A car Factory Automated thru Industrial Robotics - Automobile industry is a pioneer in this area for work force reduction. Big car makers automated 70 to 80% of the tasks

Humanoids

Humanoids at work in Banks/Front offices, serving restaurants. Artificial intelligence, NLP and use of sensors can result in extensive deployment of humanoids.

Robotics Industry - Market value:

The Industrial automation robotics value is pegged at $ ~50 Billion. Defense industry value is $~20 Billion as of 2020. Both are going to grow at above 10% CAGR on an average.

The industry is going to grow into newer avenues in the near future. For example, military combat can be replaced by Robots in dangerous places and poor safety zones or they can extend help to local police.

Similarly humanoids can replace humans in the front office or customer service related Jobs. Based on the sensory perceptions and natural language processing skills, they can answer repeated queries, perform repeated tasks and reduce the need for humans being employed at office establishments.

Robots serving in Restaurants. There are 100% robots operated restaurants in US and Japan only with skeleton staff for customer service

Case Capsules - Robotics Application to various Industries:

  • Factories use them for performing repeated tasks - called Industrial automations

  • Medical industry can use it for Surgicals, movement of medical equipments, drugs and others

  • E-Commerce companies and large factories can use them for transportation or loading of goods

  • National Defense can use it, for combat, surveilance, anti mining, photography, transportation of weaponry

  • Replace manual labour in factories to produce - Consumer goods, electronics, computer equipments, other industrial products

  • Research laboratories use it for movement of dangerous chemicals, eliminate human intereactions with hazardous environment.
